EPISODE 1: Research Roulette
"Software"
Welcome to this brand new episode where 4 healthcare students (Ellie, Haleemah, Natasha and Sam) take on a new game of “Research Roulette”. The team used a random word generator to pick a word that they all will use to base a search for an interesting research article on and come back and discuss their findings with you all.
This roulette’s word was “Software” and this spurred a hugely diverse conversation on technologies involvement in patient care from diagnosis to treatment.
Ellie kicked off the episode @3.28 with an article (1) which discussed how we might be able to use brain computer interfaces to improve the lives of people with upper limb paralysis, helping them complete digital tasks such as sending texts and online shopping. Sam then continued this conversation of the use of technological development to improve neurological treatment @10.30. He analysed a paper (2) that examined the utility and performance of a neuroprosthetic hand following spinal injury both in the lab and consequently at home. The third article (3) was presented by natasha @ 23.55 where she broke down the rationale and evidence for using VR in the assessment and rehabilitation of people with Parkinson’s disorder and discussed recommendations for future research. Finally Haleemah @ 36.00 delved into an article (4) that explored how imaging software utilised during the COVID 19 pandemic has evolved in order to better distinguish between CT of COVID patients from other lung condition. This development has the potential to improve assessment of the condition alongside determining severity and patient prognosis.

EPISODE 2: Mental Health in Medicine
"Student Speaker - Max Shaw"
In this episode we are joined by guest speak Max Shaw – a final year medical student reading at the University of Bristol. The discussion varied subjects from causes of mental health, the role social media and philosophy plays in this speciality, and the association of whether one’s mental health is exclusively a cause and effect or both? Understand how a sock analogy can be used in this context, and top tips for how a student may begin to look after their mental health. The team found Max to be a charismatic advocate for mental health and a listener can hear throughout this episode the passion and interest that all parties have for mental health alongside the support that can be offered.
